The Municipal Assembly of Barcelos unanimously approved the proposal submitted by the City Council to acquire land for the construction of the new hospital for an amount of four million euros.
With this decision, a very decisive step is taken towards compliance with the Transport and Urbanization Agreement to implement the detailed plan for the Barcelos Hospital Center that was created in 2008 with the Ministry of Health, but has been at a dead end for 16 years.
When presenting the proposal at a meeting of the municipal executive, Mario Constantino López praised the “political party consensus that has been established in Barcelos on this important plan for our municipality.” Consensus prevailed again now, in the vote in the municipal council.
For the head of the Chamber, this is “a decision of great importance and a very important step.” We are pleased that, after 16 years, we have completed a key step in this process, with full procedural transparency, which can be clearly seen in the instructions for the deliberations that were put to the vote.
It must be remembered that the decision to immediately proceed with the purchase of the land came after the guarantee given by the Minister of Health that the government would proceed with the construction of the so-called Barcelos Hospital Centre, a facility that would serve the country’s population. This municipality and the municipality of Esposende.
The document is called the “Concession and Urbanization Agreement for the Implementation of the Detailed Plan of the Barcelos Hospital Center,” which has now been approved by the municipal assembly, and sets out the rules of the deal to be implemented between the municipality and the Sociedade Agrícola da Quinta de S. Martinho, S.A.
The agreement, in addition to setting the acquisition amount for 155,850 meters of land for four million euros, defines the areas to be transferred to the public domain and the plots of land allocated for the construction of the Variant Ponte and access to the new hospital.
