Mariam Noori Mohammad Amin is 24 years old. The Kurdish woman was fleeing northern Iraq in search of a better life. He died on Wednesday while trying to cross the English Channel connecting France and the United Kingdom. It was the first casualty to be identified after a shipwreck near Calais.
Mariam’s fiance lives in England Told the BBC That said, as the boat began to sink, the two exchanged messages. The woman tried to reassure him that she was going to be rescued.
Help is too late. The groom said Mariam was with a family member on the ship. As he explained to the BBC, the woman planned to surprise him when he arrived in the UK.
The young woman’s uncle confirmed to the British station that Mariam was one of the immigrants on the boat. According to the uncle, the body is now expected to be handed over to the family in Iraq.

At least 27 people were killed, including a pregnant woman and three children. The French press called it the “worst shipwreck” involving immigrants in the English Channel.
