Boris Johnson made a surprise appearance in the UK election campaign to support the Conservative Party. An expected Labor victory at the polls would be “disastrous” for the country, says former British prime minister.
The former Prime Minister of England made a surprise appearance at a Conservative Party election rally this Tuesday.
“I’m here for one reason and one reason only, and it’s the same reason for all of you. (…) We’re here because we love our country,” Boris Johnson said, adding that he believes the Labor Party will ” destroy much of what the Conservatives have been able to achieve in recent years.”
Boris Johnson was greeted enthusiastically by the crowd. He used the occasion to make a speech citing his personal achievements and warned of the dangers of the opposition coming to power. A reality that is about to happen as the polls give Keir Starmer’s party a win.
“Whatever our differences, they are absolutely trivial compared to the disaster we could face if the polls are right,” the former prime minister said.
Aware that his appearance might create embarrassment, Boris Johnson explained that he was glad Rishi Sunak invited him: “Of course I can’t say no.”
Rishi Sunak later appeared, but not with Boris Johnson, and thanked his predecessor for their support.
Boris Johnson is one of the most recognizable figures in British politics. He served as the Prime Minister of the country between 2019 and 2022. Last year, he resigned from the post due to a rebellion within the Conservative Party. Rishi Sunak was one of those involved.
Until now, the former prime minister has sidelined the entire campaign, endorsing only individual candidates through video messages.
Assembly snap elections will be held next Thursday, July 4.
