The new water efficiency project joins the efficiency strategy in water supply management, which began in 2018, which has already allowed for a reduction of about 20%.
The municipality is developing a large-scale water efficiency project with the aim of reducing water losses along the municipal supply networks. In addition to the environmental benefits, this measure has already allowed a real reduction in losses of about 19.5% in the past four years.
The investment plan, under the Efficiency Strategy in Water Supply Management, launched in 2018, already represents a domestic investment of about one and a half million euros.
In pursuit of the strategy, the municipality has an ongoing water efficiency project with performance compensation, which aims to achieve a reduction to about half of its current values, over a five-year period, representing a savings to the municipal treasury of 2.3 million. euro.
To achieve the set goals, a set of infrastructure rehabilitation needs will be assessed, artificial intelligence tools will be implemented that will allow analysis of the collected data and support rapid work on the ground to eliminate leaks along 495 km of water networks in the province and also reduce pressure in critical areas, from In order to reduce the number of ruptures and the expenses associated with resolving them.
At the commercial level, consumption and illegal connections will be detected and eliminated, and the renewal of the meter network will be evaluated, in order to make the measurement and billing of the service provided to customers more efficient.
It should be noted that according to the report prepared by the Water and Sanitation Regulatory Authority, in 2018, the municipality of Chaves ranked third in the country in terms of the largest percentage of water wastage. That year, according to the regulator’s calculations, the amount of waste amounted to about 70%, which represented a strong negative financial impact on municipal coffers.
