The long-running television series that brings together Sporting and Rafael Liao, began on June 14, 2018, when the striker decided to unilaterally terminate with the Lions, after attacking the club’s academy, in Alcochet, had another episode, with the Court of Arbitration (TAS), based in Lausanne, Switzerland, to determine the compensation of 16.5 million euros, stipulated by the Portuguese Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAD), in March 2020, in addition to interest, which is estimated at 20 million euros, also pays Lille, the French club that acquired the player at no cost, in August 8, 2018.
The CAS decision, which was confirmed to us by a source from the authority, is not subject to appeal on merit, but the TAD decision, which was taken in March 2021, and Rafael Liao’s appeal was rejected by the Lisbon Court of Appeal in January. From this year, it is still not closed. As found by A BOLA, the player’s revocation request will now be considered by the High Court of Justice.
There is a real possibility that the amount of compensation that Lille may incur in connection with a future decision to be taken by FIFA may influence the decision of the TAD, given the solidarity of the obligation that is now assumed, and therefore the outcome of this process is still not closed in qualitative and quantitative terms. What now appears to be a good judicial decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, given the lack of knowledge of the outcome of the procedure that will now take place in FIFA, could after all turn into an even greater nightmare”, explains A BOLA Lúcio Miguel Correa, Professor of Law in Sports.
