The future of AirPods will include the integration of an infrared camera, and will launch in 2026, according to MacRumors.
The main function of the device will be its integration with the Vision Pro headset, improving Apple’s spatial computing ecosystem and making the AirPods an extension of this device.
The current AirPods already have spatial audio, which changes the direction of the sound depending on the position of the head. With the cameras, this could be taken to another level: it will be possible to control music or answer calls with air gestures, without touching any device.
Furthermore, cameras may allow functions such as remote control of the device or real-time translation. The possibilities are endless and can change the way we use technology on a daily basis.
However, with this innovation also arise some challenges, namely privacy, as the integration of cameras raises questions about the use and control of captured images. The issue of battery life also arises, as the addition of cameras and gesture recognition functions can significantly increase power consumption.
