So far, the US space agency has found more than 20,000 “near-Earth objects” (NEO), but one of them has caught the attention of experts because of its size. Asteroid 2013 YD48 is 104 meters wide.
According to the predictions of experts, the celestial body will pass close to the Earth on January 11, 2022.
Before the “giant” pass, NASA’s Asteroid Monitoring Panel predicts that other smaller asteroids, between 4 and 12 meters in size, should also approach our planet.
Even the smallest of them, a collision with the Earth of an asteroid at a very high speed can cause serious damage. The width of the asteroid that exploded in the atmosphere in 2013 in Russia, causing the destruction of more than 7,000 buildings and damage exceeding 180 million Brazilian reals, was only 17 meters wide.
Fortunately, all of these near-Earth objects will pass, but not close enough to cause a collision. According to the data of the European Space Agency, we only need to worry about the asteroid 2019 SU3, which has a chance of colliding with our planet in the year 2084. (With Sputnik Brazil)
