Hundreds of Amazon workers walked out at a distribution center in Tilbury, southeast England, to protest better pay, in what the GMB union said was the latest sign of workers’ discontent over rising cost of living sparking strikes across the country.
“Amazon continues to refuse to work with unions to offer better working conditions and fair wages. The repeated use of short-term contracts is intended to undermine workers’ rights,” the union said Thursday.
The GMB said 800 workers walked out of the warehouse on Wednesday and Thursday as the union sought a two pound ($2.44) pay rise.
The US tech giant, which employs 70,000 workers in the UK, said in an email that starting wages would rise from at least £10.50 to £11.45 an hour.
Workers across sectors including railways, airlines and telecoms have gone on strike in the UK in recent months as pay rises have lagged behind rising inflation.
