The German Football League (DFL) announced on Wednesday that it has reversed its decision to allow foreign investments into the organization.
The decision comes after several weeks in which fans of German clubs, in all stadiums, protested insistently against this investment.
“Taking into account current developments, the successful continuation of the process is no longer possible,” said Hans-Joachim Watzke, spokesman for the German Football League (and CEO of Borussia Dortmund).
“Although there is a large majority in favor of the business need for a strategic partnership, German professional football is in the midst of a test taking place not only within the league's partnership with the clubs, but also partly within the clubs between professionals and coaches.” Club managers, supervisory bodies and general assemblies. Furthermore, fan communities are organizing large protests that increasingly threaten game operations, the normal functioning of games, and thus the integrity of competition.
It should be noted that in December, the Bundesliga and Second Division clubs voted in favor of starting negotiations with a potential foreign investor.
