The principal of the Aldapeta María Ikastetxea school in San Sebastian, José Ismendi, reported to the Basque police the existence of two groups containing sexual content and harassment on WhatsApp, with more than a thousand additional members, students from different schools in the area, according to the Spanish news agency EFE.
The educational institution warned guardians, through a letter sent on Tuesday, and called on them to pay attention to invitations received by minors to enter into a conversation with content that is “extremely unpleasant and inappropriate for young people of this age.” The school administration is also asking parents to “check their children’s phones” and, if they realize they are part of the conversation in question, “leave immediately.” Parents are also asked not to delete messages from their mobile phones and to report them to the authorities.
The school administration also explains, in the sent letter, that it carefully monitored the situation through “complaints from several families,” whose children received an invitation. “Maybe it is not organized by school students, but by Adults who have other purposes,” the document states.
The local police, quoted by EFE, indicate that they have not yet received complaints about this matter, but they have received some requests for clarification from some parents and are investigating what happened.
