The 76-meter-long vessel is a research vessel already purchased and manufactured by Microsoft.
About 25 people were injured when a ship capsized in a dry dock in Leith, near the Scottish capital Edinburgh, on Wednesday (22), emergency workers said. Images shared on social media show the vessel tipped over at an angle of 45 degrees.
Police and emergency services were called to Imperial Dock in England following reports that a vessel had broken down on board.
The Scottish Ambulance Service said 15 people were taken to hospital and a further 10 were treated there and discharged. Local police urged the public to avoid the area to access emergency services.
According to the BBC, authorities are urging people not to seek the nearest emergency room unless it is an emergency. At least one will undergo surgery, according to the British television network.
Photos from the scene showed the ship tilted on its side at a 45-degree angle. Local official Adam McVeigh tweeted that the ship had drifted due to strong winds.
“Terrifying for those on board, my thoughts are with the injured and I hope they all make a speedy recovery,” the official said. “Please avoid that area.”
The 76-meter-long vessel, known as the Petrel, was a research vessel previously purchased and built by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
The Petrel is equipped with deep-sea exploration technology and has led several high-profile missions to locate historic shipwrecks, including the 2017 discovery of the USS Indianapolis in the Philippine Sea.
The BBC reports that the cruise has been grounded since 2020 due to operational challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
